The majestically built capital of the island will bewitch you with the first glance. The amphitheatrically architecture gives it a glamour that similar to it nothing exists. The white washed houses with red ceramic tiles complete scenery of an impressive picturesque location. Its harbor is very attractive, not only because of innumerable sailing boats that have chosen it as their destination, but also by all visitors that have decided to become acquainted with the cosmopolitan atmosphere that it offers. There you will find every kind of store for entertainment and shopping. The ancient
city of Skiathos (170 years ago) was situated at the same position that
the current capital is found. An ancient wall was raised around it, during
the 4th century B.C., parts of which still exist today at the Agias Triadas
church, and at the cemetery, which was farthest most part of the city.
One thing in common that ancient Skiathos has with the modern city is,
that both had experienced growth in all its grandeur. The first during
the classic period and the second shortly before the threshold of the 21st
century.
The Bourtzi
is the jewel and trademark at the entrance of the capital. The ruins of
the former Venetian fortress can be found on a peninsula full of pine trees,
reminding one of times of the past when its main role was to protect against
the raids of the pirates.
Today
during your visit you will find a beautiful building from the neoclassical
period that operates as a public school. From this setting, is the monument
of Alexandros Papadiamantis, who was a great Greek scholar, could not be
missing.
An enormous
rock that protrudes from the sea, is were the city had found refuge during
the middle ages. There in the middle of the 14th century the inhabitants
of Skopelos had built their homes very close to each other, so as to feel
protected from pirates. By wandering for one and a half hours with a boat,
or covering a distance of about three hours by foot, you will have the
opportunity to visit the named Castle (Castro) with the fantastic view.
Its ruins stand patiently waiting for their visitors so that they can journey
them through time.
During
the 7th and 8th centuries it would break the raging waves with its imposing
construction. Today the remains of the of pier can be found covered and
defeated from the opponent that time and again they had beaten.
The churches
that existed on the castle reached 30 in numbers. Today out of these very
few remain, the church of Christ being the most important. It contains
wall paintings from the after Byzantine period, while the history of its
icons date back about 300 years.
You could
not leave the island of Papadiamantis without visiting his house. Today
it remains intact and operates as a museum, and you can within his personal
belongings, travel to the period of its magnificent creation. This great
Greek scholar has written with his pen masterpieces such as: "The Gipsy
Girl", "The Murderess", "The Poor Saint" and many more. Within these he
has described life in a unique way, its morals and customs of the inhabitants
of Skiathos giving vivid descriptions.
If you
are an admirer of the vessels, you have to surely visit the Shipyard (Karnagio
in Greek). It is located in the southern part of the city and is the area
where they build boats. There you will hear them talking about the Great
Tarsana the famous shipyard where ships were constructed. It is worthwhile
visiting it, although you will discover that its splendor has withered,
since its work is now are limited only in the preservation of vessels.
